DAY 1: Arrival in Clonegal

DAY 2: Clonegal - Shillelagh

Distance 20km • Approximate Walking Time 4 - 6 hrs • Ascent (↑) 280m

Your first days walking is mainly along remote country roads through rolling hills and quiet woodlands. Shillelagh is famous for giving its name to the quintessential Irish fighting stick, typically made from the wood of the blackthorn tree.

DAY 3: Shillelagh - Tinahely

15km • 4 - 6 hrs • (↑) 210m

You set out along a quiet country road past St Finian’s Church, named after a holy man from Westmeath credited with christianising the local area. Further on you head into Muskeagh Woods before an old boreen leads you towards Tinahely village.

DAY 4: Tinahely - Iron Bridge

21km • 4 - 6 hours • (↑) 400m

Starting off on a grass track around Coolafunshoge Mountain, the route skirts the tiny village of Moyne before heading into dense woodland around Ballygobban Mountain. A descent into the Ow River Valley brings you down to Iron Bridge.
